How to price AI-assisted freelance work in the UK: costs, fees, tax and late payment

Not tax advice. This guide summarises GOV.UK guidance and platform help pages, checked 24 October 2026, and uses simple arithmetic to show how costs add up. It doesn’t suggest what you will earn. Tax rates below are for England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the 2026–27 tax year; Scotland has different income tax bands. If you’re unsure, speak to an accountant. The problem with pricing AI-assisted work

If AI tools let you finish a blog post in two hours instead of four, should you charge half as much? Most freelancers who’ve thought about it say no. Clients pay for the result, your judgement and your accountability, not for the minutes. But you do need a price that’s honest, competitive and actually covers your costs once fees and tax come off.

This guide walks through those costs in order, then looks at how to quote, and how to protect yourself if a business client pays late.

Step 1: list what the work costs you

Start with the money that leaves your account whether or not you win work:

  • AI subscriptions. For example, the UK App Store lists ChatGPT Plus at £19.99 a month, including VAT (App Store UK). Our starter stack guide lists more tools with UK prices. Check each tool’s current price, and whether its terms allow commercial use of what you create on the plan you’re on.
  • Other software, such as design tools, a grammar checker, cloud storage or accounting software.
  • Equipment and training you buy for the work.

Add them up as a monthly figure. Divide by the number of paid hours or projects you realistically expect in a month, and that’s the overhead each job needs to cover before you’ve paid yourself anything.

Step 2: gross up for platform fees

If you sell through a marketplace, its fee comes off the top. To work out the price you need to charge, divide what you want to receive by what the platform lets you keep:

  • Upwork charges freelancers 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you send a proposal. Upwork’s own example: to take home $20 an hour after a 10% fee, charge $22.22 (Upwork Help).
  • Fiverr sellers keep 80% of each order, including extras and tips (Fiverr Help Centre). So to receive £100, the order needs to be £125, because £100 ÷ 0.8 = £125.

Fiverr buyers also pay their own service fee on top, so the client’s total is higher than your Gig price. See our Upwork and Fiverr guide for the details.

Step 3: set aside tax and National Insurance

Your profit (income minus allowable expenses) is taxed. For 2026–27 (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027), GOV.UK lists these rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland (GOV.UK, Income Tax rates):

Income Tax bands for 2026–27 (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), from GOV.UK, checked 24 October 2026.
BandTaxable incomeRate
Personal AllowanceUp to £12,5700%
Basic rate£12,571 to £50,27020%
Higher rate£50,271 to £125,14040%
Additional rateOver £125,14045%

National Insurance on self-employed profits

Income Tax is charged on your total income, so if your job already uses your Personal Allowance, your side profits are taxed at your top rate from the first pound. National Insurance works differently. Class 4 is worked out on your self-employed profits on their own: for 2026–27 it’s 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above that. If your profits are £7,105 or more, you’re treated as having paid Class 2 contributions, which protect your State Pension record; below that you can choose to pay voluntary Class 2 at £3.65 a week (GOV.UK, self-employed National Insurance rates).

The £1,000 trading allowance means you usually don’t need to tell HMRC about gross trading income of £1,000 or less in a tax year (GOV.UK). Above that, a simple habit is to move a fixed share of every payment into a separate savings account for tax. The right share depends on your other income, so use HMRC’s figures or an accountant to set it. Our UK side hustle tax basics covers registering and deadlines.

Step 4: know where the VAT line is

You must register for VAT if your total taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You can also register voluntarily below that (GOV.UK, when to register for VAT). Most side hustles are well below the threshold, but if you’re getting close, remember that once registered you’d normally add VAT to prices for UK clients. Business clients can usually reclaim it; individual clients can’t, so it affects how competitive you look. Quote clearly as “plus VAT” or “no VAT charged” so there’s no confusion.

Step 5: decide how to quote

Price the deliverable, not the minutes

Project or per-piece pricing suits AI-assisted work, because the client knows what they’re buying and you benefit from working efficiently. Define exactly what’s included: word count or length, number of revision rounds, research, images, and turnaround.

Be upfront about AI

Upwork’s help centre recommends telling clients upfront when you use generative AI, and checking they haven’t prohibited it (Upwork Help). That honesty can support your price: explain what you do that the tool doesn’t, such as checking facts, matching the client’s voice and taking responsibility for the result.

Offer tiers

A simple three-level offer (for example, edit only, draft and edit, or full research and draft) lets clients choose without you discounting. Fiverr Gigs are built around this kind of package structure.

Put it in writing

Your quote or contract should cover price, what’s included, payment terms, who owns the finished work and when, and how you’ll use AI tools and handle confidential information.

If a business client pays late

For business-to-business work, UK law gives you rights if a client pays late. Unless your contract sets a different rate, you can claim statutory interest of 8% plus the Bank of England base rate on the overdue amount (GOV.UK, charging interest on commercial debt). You can also claim a fixed sum for debt recovery costs: £40 on debts up to £999.99, £70 on £1,000 to £9,999.99, and £100 on £10,000 or more (GOV.UK, claim debt recovery costs).

These rules apply to business clients, not to private individuals. On marketplaces, payment usually runs through the platform’s own system, so read its payment protection rules instead. For direct clients, putting your payment terms on every invoice is the simplest protection.

A quick pricing checklist

  1. Monthly tool and software costs, divided across the work you expect.
  2. Platform fee, grossed up so you receive what you intended.
  3. A share of every payment saved for Income Tax and National Insurance.
  4. A note of how close you are to the VAT threshold.
  5. Clear scope, revisions, AI use and payment terms in writing.

FAQ

Should I charge less because AI makes me faster?

That’s your choice, but pricing per deliverable means faster work isn’t automatically cheaper for the client. What matters is that the price reflects the quality and responsibility you’re offering, and that you’re honest about how you work.

Do I pay National Insurance on a small side hustle?

Class 4 is charged on self-employed profits above £12,570 for 2026–27. Below £7,105 of profit, Class 2 is voluntary. GOV.UK has the full rules.

Can I charge late-payment interest to a private customer?

The statutory interest and fixed recovery costs on GOV.UK apply to business-to-business debts. For private customers, rely on your written terms and get advice if needed.
