Selling AI-assisted digital products on Etsy UK: fees, AI rules and VAT
How this guide works: it’s based on Etsy’s own fees policy, help centre and Seller Handbook, plus GOV.UK, checked 24 October 2026. We haven’t run an Etsy shop for this article, and we don’t publish sales or earnings figures. Etsy’s listing fee is set in US dollars; Etsy shows it as roughly £0.15 on its UK sell page. None of the links on this page are affiliate links.
Who this is for
Digital downloads such as planners, wall art prints, invitations, templates and stickers are a popular side hustle because there’s nothing to post. AI image and writing tools have made them quicker to produce, which also means there are far more of them. This guide covers what Etsy charges UK sellers, what its rules say about AI, and the VAT and tax points that catch people out.
What Etsy charges UK sellers
From Etsy’s UK sell page and fees policy (Etsy fees and payments policy, checked 24 Oct 2026):
- Listing fee: $0.20 per listing (about £0.15). A listing lasts four months or until the item sells. If you sell more than one of a multi-quantity listing, you pay $0.20 for each extra item, because the listing renews automatically.
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the price you show, plus any postage and gift-wrap charges. For sellers outside the US, it’s worked out on the VAT-inclusive price.
- Payment processing (UK): 4% + £0.20 per order, on the total sale price including tax and postage. Etsy says processing fees are subject to VAT.
- Regulatory operating fee (UK): 0.48% of the item price, postage and gift wrap. Etsy raised it from 0.32% from 22 June 2026, and it’s subject to VAT.
- Offsite Ads: 15% of the order, charged only when a sale comes from an Etsy ad shown on another site. Shops that pass a sales level set by Etsy are enrolled automatically with a lower rate; check the current rules in your Shop Manager.
- Currency conversion: 2.5% if you list in a different currency from your payment account.
Etsy’s sell page also mentions a one-off set-up fee charged when you open a shop. We couldn’t confirm the current amount for UK sellers, so check current pricing on Etsy’s sell page before you sign up.
| Fee | Rate | On a £5.00 sale |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 | about £0.15 |
| Transaction | 6.5% | about £0.33 |
| Payment processing | 4% + £0.20 | £0.40 |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.48% | about £0.02 |
| Total before VAT on fees | about £0.90 |
What Etsy says about AI
Etsy’s creativity standards allow items made with the help of AI, but with conditions. Its help centre and Seller Handbook say (Etsy Help, What can I sell on Etsy; Etsy Seller Handbook):
- Disclose it. If you used AI to create an item, say so in the listing description. Items you designed using AI prompts come under Etsy’s “Designed by a seller” category, so don’t label them as handmade.
- Bot-generated content is banned. Etsy doesn’t allow listings mass-produced by automation without individual human oversight.
- AI-generated instructions are banned. Etsy’s rules prohibit AI-generated functional instructions, such as patterns, recipes, plans, manuals and instructional e-books.
- AI prompt bundles are banned. You can’t sell collections of prompts.
- Photos must be honest. Etsy requires listing photos that accurately represent the item. For physical products, that includes at least one unedited photo of the real item, with some exceptions.
Etsy says serious or repeated breaches can lead to listings being removed or a shop being suspended or closed. Read the current policy pages yourself before you list, because these rules have changed more than once.
Copyright and trade marks
Don’t use AI to imitate a living artist’s style by name, a brand, or a character you don’t own. Etsy acts on intellectual property reports, and a takedown can hurt your shop. The UK government’s Report on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence (18 March 2026) also notes legal uncertainty over the protection of purely computer-generated works, which means a design made entirely by AI may be harder to protect from copycats than one with clear human creative input (GOV.UK).
VAT on digital downloads
Etsy’s help centre says that, for downloadable digital items bought by buyers in the UK and several other regions, Etsy calculates, collects and pays the VAT itself (Etsy Help, How VAT works on digital items). That doesn’t remove all VAT questions. VAT can also apply to Etsy’s own fees, and if your total taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 months you must register for VAT (GOV.UK, when to register for VAT). If you’re already VAT-registered for another business, speak to an accountant about how your Etsy sales fit in.
Income tax and HMRC reporting
Regular selling of things you make is usually trading. You can earn up to £1,000 of gross trading income a year tax-free under the trading allowance; above that, you’ll normally register for Self Assessment (GOV.UK). Since 1 January 2024, platforms like Etsy have had to report sellers’ income to HMRC. Sellers of goods who make fewer than 30 sales and receive less than about £1,700 (€2,000) in a calendar year aren’t reported, but that doesn’t change whether you owe tax (GOV.UK, income from online platforms). More detail is in our UK side hustle tax basics.
A careful way to start
- Pick a niche where your own taste or knowledge adds something, such as UK school-year planners or wedding stationery for a specific style.
- Use AI for drafts and variations, then edit by hand so each design is genuinely yours.
- Write an honest description that includes how you used AI.
- Start with a handful of listings and see what the fees do to your price before you add more.
- Keep a record of every sale and fee from day one.

FAQ
Can I sell AI art on Etsy?
Yes, if you disclose AI use in the description, the design comes from your own prompts and input, and it doesn’t break other rules such as intellectual property. Bot-generated listings without human oversight aren’t allowed.
Can I sell an AI-written e-book or recipe pack on Etsy?
Etsy’s rules prohibit AI-generated functional instructions, which include recipes, patterns, plans, manuals and instructional e-books.
Do I need to charge VAT on digital downloads to UK buyers?
Etsy’s help centre says it collects and pays VAT on digital items bought by UK buyers. Your own VAT registration depends on your total taxable turnover.
